Marn Bang Jai Episode 1
This is a hit. Thank you C7, always delivering. I’ll give this ep. a 6
1. Weir & Mookda are perfectly cast together. Weir can be a bit stiff here at times. He takes a while to warm up to the character. After the first 45 minutes, he’s fine. Mookda as Lada was on fire.
2. Mookda’s character (Lada – I’m going to stick w/ that from now on) is something I was w/ from the get-go. I was in the drum corps. I was a fifer. She would have been part of the Elite squad of 10 girls…in our drum corps called the Color Guards. They were so badass. They sat together, ate together, hung out together. They were a squad. In our school they were Elite. It was a hard group to get into & once in you were dedicated – HOURS/DAYS/NIGHTS/WEEKENDS of training. I’m not joking. The baton & flag turning has to be uniform & all that.
3. Lada’s response to her father’s death– killed me, I was crying buckets. I felt the same pain and probably had an even more visceral reaction. It’s hard to watch.
4. I think all the characters had chem w/ each other but the leads really didn’t flicker to life for me until the last 2 mins when Thaen & Lada were in the garden. Crazy as it was.
5. I feel the story is a bit cheapened by three annoying angles (which also part of plenty of the many tropes I do let pass in this series):
a. the money-hungry stepmom – let’s be done w/ this. Just not necessary. Why not a loving stepmom put in a tough situation?
b. the often Chinese mobster – Thai people have a serious shit against Chinese people. They make them out to be mobsters ALL the time & so many of them are of Chinese descent. Crazy shit.
c. There’s always that sister-in-law that wants to break that 9th commandment. Why?
Anyway, did I love this ep? It had me hooked for the entire episode. So yeah. I know Lada was childish…Weir was old…everyone else was listless…There was something there.
I know all the actors individually and their abilities. I like all the characters individually. I’ve bought into the two leads in the last 2 minutes. That’s enough to get to episode 2.
